Dance Deco

Dance Deco explores individual body and identity by examining the decorative expression of dance. China’s dance education and dance culture leave inerasable imprints on dancers. Folk dance, modern dance, classical dance, and contemporary dance do not only convey the aesthetics of the body; they also reflect trajectories of social development.

At Rockbund Art Museum, performers use the structure of scatter plots to collage, restructure, and deconstruct dance memories, demonstrating the properties of each individual body. The work also involves Moe Satt’s Like Umbrella, Like King. In art, DECO not only stands for decoration, but more precisely for the application of classical elements and spirit in modern art.

Dance Deco applies dance’s traditional elements to reflection on the body. In Asian contemporary arts theatre, discussion and the search for the so-called properties of the “Asian body” have continued for years. The work, created by Xiao Ke × Zi Han as RAM artists in residence, is another attempt to inspire reflection and research on the “Asian body” among a new generation.
