2012 / XIAO KE × ZI HAN

Now as Then

Theatre

PROJECT NOTE

Now as Then is a theatre performance work based on interviews made by Zi Han and Xiao Ke with more than 25 independent contemporary theatre artists in mainland China. The work uses these sound recordings as its background; a 45-minute dance film shot in three empty theatres is projected on a large screen while Xiao Ke performs in another room. A small screen on stage shows the live image from that room through an internet connection, while Zi Han controls the lighting, video, and sound.

The theatre stage remains empty for most of the performance, yet performance takes place simultaneously elsewhere. Through interview recordings, shifting lights, moving images, and live music, the work connects people, theatre, and multiple spaces in time.
