Artist-run experimental community and public programme

PROJECT NOTE
In the spring of 2022, everyday areas in Shanghai were repeatedly redefined as lockdown, controlled, precautionary, or enclosed zones. OO Zoom emerged from this experience as a post-pandemic zone initiated independently by Shanghai artists for the Rockbund Art Museum’s “The Good Life” HighLight programme.
Located on the ground floor of MAYFUNG Building, OO Zoom was conceived as a heterotopian community for “the good life.” Visitors entered the open, pink-toned space by reading a guide, undergoing a playful “test,” and being purified with the scent of sage. Artificial grass, shaggy rugs, inflatable toys, and other pink objects occupied the unfinished building, forming a deliberately inexpensive and dreamlike fiction.
Across seven weeks, invited participants developed actions, performances, live interactions, discussions, physical activities, and music parties. Each event imagined and designed a version of “the good life,” accumulating and changing through collective creation.
The temporary Forest Dance Party shop displayed “goods” that were not necessities but carried personal emotion and memory. A sound installation by Zi Han used intermittent, non-semantic mouth sounds as background noise, intensifying OO Zoom’s absurd, humorous, and uncanny atmosphere.
QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY
Is there an essential difference, or a clear boundary, between everyday life and performance?
Can a fictional intervention establish fundamental emotional connections within a community?
When deeper bonds form within a group, does the idea of “the good life” remain individual?
