To & Fro

To & Fro is based on Darling Hurt V — Crush, Xiao Ke and Zi Han’s 2012 socially engaged theatre work. The artists took one hundred white T-shirts into public streets in Shanghai and crushed them at fourteen traffic crossings. Each shirt bears the trace of car wheels and is named with information about its time and location.

In this new work, the one hundred crushed T-shirts are displayed again, alongside the documentary of their making. Xiao Ke and Zi Han use simple movements, repeated over two hours, to build an energetic dialogue with the shirts in live performance—bringing “Crush” back to the present tense, Space Station, and people’s memory and thought.
