Too Late

Too Late is a theatre work by Xiao Ke × Zi Han from 2017. It applies the concept of dynamic theatre: a creative practice that lets performance flow through public space.

The work takes place inside INSTANT—an independent inflatable spatial installation designed by Xiao Ke × Zi Han that can be moved, transformed and made to disappear. INSTANT occupies a footprint of 16 by 16 metres and stands 9 metres high. It can be inflated and erected on an open site, a process that requires the collective effort of more than a dozen people. This temporary, mobile and collectively built theatre structure is Xiao Ke × Zi Han’s declaration of and practice of artists’ autonomy, independence and collaboration.

The principal performers, extras and audience together constitute the work. Through the spaces inside and outside the installation, it disrupts conventional modes of viewing and performance. The performance unfolds in four chapters over four days, evoking an austere performance state charged with a sense of violence.
